Nursery
Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Thiruvananthapuram offer LKG and UKG in all the school under the Chinmaya educational cultural and charitable Trust. The LKG program is designed to develop One hundred and twelve living skills in the three year olds. This is achieved through activities, not textbooks. The activities include clay modeling drawing, thread work, vegetable printing etc each one designed to develop specific skills. They go for nature walk once a week, and the discussion that follows develops in them the capability to observe and communicate and a love for nature. They are give opportunity to tell stories of their own; sing songs on given themes and draw pictures to give expression to their imagination. Walls of all KG classes are painted with black board paint up to a height 3.5 feet; they are free to draw write in this space. Learning takes place through expression in place of suppression in conventional classrooms. Physical activities are given to develop he muscles including those which we usually neglect, like muscles on fingers. These activities also help in activating the portions of the brain controlling them. Activities are so designed that there is a balanced development of all faculties; the child can blossom later in which ever field he has a natural interests.
The programme in UKG is similar to that in the LKG , but there the stress is on communication skill, especially the basic interpersonal communication skills. They will have become familiar with the LKG. The children also develop the list any and speaking through action process of list any to the teacher and replying in the most natural way. Role-plays, with dialogues make them capable of expressing emotions without being over ridden by them. Library corner provides an opportunity to come in to contact with books; start loving the books. By the time they come out of the UKG they are capable of communicating with other individuals as well as to groups;
The teachers who are well trained in the development of living and communication skills achieve all this Sri. V.V. Joseph of the association of learning disabilities India provided training. The training has been on got the past eighteen months and will continue for another twelve months. One very special advantage of the method is that children with problems that ca later manifest as learning disabilities can be detected and rectified this early stage. With this in view a support group is formed by training a few teachers ( in the school section) in counseling for disabilities who can diagnose the problem and suggest solutions . Counseling is given to the children along with the parents and where it is necessary parents are directed to approach specialists.
Primary
The primary sections (classes 1-VII) in all our schools follow the CBSE curriculum. The CBSE is switching to the new grading system from the year 2006-07. The NCERT books under the new scheme will be published in three stages. But as the NCERT books will always come late we cannot wait for them and we use books by private publishers. The books are selected by a committee each for each subject, taking care of the content, coverage of syllabus, suitability for the age group, and he correctness of exposition and language. There could still be errors in the books, which are corrected after a discussion in the subject councils.
From the year 2006-07 on wards we follow the grading system, switching the emphasis from the teacher to the learner. Learning takes place through activities under the guidance of the teacher. This gives a first hand experience for the learner in those topics or which he involve in activities, and makes him capable of understanding even the other topics where the class room teaching is resorted to. Where class room teaching is done, be provide opportunity for he child to express himself, there by making the process of learning a pleasant experience. Thus even in the class room the child is engaged in activities and does not remain a passive listener ( or non-listener) only to learn by heart a few dictated passages.
Along with the grading system we also have the semesters replacing the annual system. The child does not have to memorize the whole years portions during March. In the month of October the child is comprehensively tested on the porion until then and on portions after that at the end of the year. This, we hope, will make the examinations tension free.
The evaluation will be continuous and comprehensive,. While the teaching process is on, evaluation also takes place. There will be class tests every months. The activities given are also evaluated. Oral tests also from a part of continuous evaluation. Thirty percent to the end semester examination. We do not consider out children to be industrial diagnosis and remedy.
Secondary and Higher secondary:
Classes VIII to XII are under different boards, STATE CESE and ICSE. The corresponding curricula are used. The examinations are conducted according to the patterns of the respective boards. The give some practice before they appear for a board examinations with a whole year’s portion, they are annual examinations in these classes. There will be class test every month and half yearly examination in October. Thirty percent of the marks in each subject is allotted to class test (10%) , half yearly examination (10%) and to Viva voce(10%). Seventy percent is given to the annual examination. The Viva Voce is conducted I the same manner as any interview, with a board constituted for the purpose and on formalities observed. After the Viva Voce the Board members go to the class and discuss with the students their weakness and suggest ways and means to correct them. This provides training and confidence to the students to face interviews in later life. In classes X and XII these constitute the internal assessment as required by the respective boards.
